The 4 ways an app gets pulled
Apps in this category are removed when store rules tighten, when a complaint triggers a review, when the app is caught collecting more than it declared, or when the developer stops paying the annual fee. Only the third involves doing something wrong at the time.
The pattern repeats often enough in this category to be worth understanding rather than treating as bad luck. It also explains why some products deliberately stay off stores.
The rules moved
Stores update their policies regularly, and existing apps are re-judged against the new text. An assistant approved under one set of content rules can breach the next set without changing a line of code. This is the most common cause and it arrives as an e-mail.
A complaint triggered a review
Reports move an app to the front of a queue. The review that follows applies current rules to an app that has not been looked at in years, which is a different situation from the original approval. The complaint need not be justified for the review to find something.
The declaration did not match
Privacy declarations are checked against actual behaviour, including by automated scanning. An app collecting an identifier it did not declare gets removed, and this is the one case where the removal is straightforwardly earned.
The developer stopped paying
Store membership is an annual fee, and a small developer who stops maintaining a product simply stops paying. The app disappears quietly and nobody announces it, which is why some apps vanish with no story at all.
Questions about the app
Can a removed app come back?
Often, after changes and an appeal, in weeks. The gap is what breaks the habit, and many products do not recover from it.
Do I lose my data?
Not immediately, and the app stops updating and eventually stops working. Exporting when you hear about a removal is worth doing the same day.
Is a web app immune to this?
To store removal, yes. It has its own exposure through hosting and domains, which is a different set of risks rather than none.
Use a version that no store can take off your device.
